Using a Screen Reader

We have pledged to designed our website to work well with screen readers like:

NVDA (free, Windows)

VoiceOver (built-in on Mac and iPhone)

TalkBack (built-in on Android)

Because our website is built with WordPress, many accessibility features are already supported through the underlying code and structure. This means we can:

Create a clear heading structure so content is easy to navigate.

Include alt-text for all important images

Use ARIA labels where needed for clarity

Maintain a logical tab order for easy keyboard navigation

Write descriptive link text (no vague “click here”.

How WordPress Helps:

Modern WordPress themes and plugins are built with accessibility in mind. This means screen readers can interpret menus, headings, buttons, and images more clearly and consistently.

The theme we currently use is the Skills For Life WordPress theme by Mersey Weaver Scouts.

What You Can Do:

If you’re using a screen reader, just browse the site as you normally would. You can jump through headings, landmarks and links using your usual screen reader shortcuts.

If you ever have difficulty accessing any part of the site, please contact our media team or submit feedback.
